I like Pixar because their movies are always engaging on two levels. On the basic level, we have fun following the action of the story. On a higher level, we experience the sense of discovery as the characters mature from selfish motive to responding to something bigger than the self.

Both David Goleman's exposition of Emotional Intelligence and Chris Lowney's book on Heroic Leadership point to self-awareness as the foundation to good leadership.

Many people, however, will miss a tiny but important point. Self-awareness is important even if you don't dream of becoming a leader.

Leadership Class Notes, Sessions 1-2

The first two sessions of the Leadership class are now over. Coming back to teaching is a very satisfying experience, especially if the class is enthusiastic.

Session 1's emphasis was on defining the qualities of a leader as opposed to that of a manager. Business courses define management as POLC (planning, organizing, leading and controlling), but the actual instruction usually focus only on the POC aspects.

Accepting What Is

It's natural for "things" to happen to us as we go through our lives. But when these things happen to us, we feel compelled to judge or label them. A shortage of money is "bad." Lack of activity is "boring". A breakup is "depressing."
