Drupal 6 Installation and Configuration - Review and Intro

There is a lot to rave about Drupal 6. The pages have less clutter, thanks to collapsible sections. The installation process has been streamlined, with helpful hints throughout the steps and drag and drop is now available (like in rearranging your blocks).

How easy is it to install and configure Drupal? It took me less than 5 minutes to do it. The steps below assume you already have Apache, MySQL and PHP (AMP) installed. If not, scroll down to the bottom of this post, where I explain shortcuts to getting and installing AMP.

The Power of Drupal Categories

Drupal Taxonomy: the power to organize and reorganize

The Drupal Taxonomy module (aka Categories) is one of its most powerful features. Combined with its hooks, Drupal allows administrators to organize and reorganize content easily, giving more flexibility for knowledge sharing in an organization that continuously discovers better ways to share knowledge.

Did You Know? 4.0

Did You Know? is a great presentation that sums up the changes happening because of the internet, mobile phones and social media.

Yes, Pinoys Can!

I've been helping an all-Filipino team to create a consumer tech product. Sorry, can't give out details for now. But here is what we can reveal for now.

It's something that will demonstrate that we Filipinos can produce a tech product locally. The R&D is being done garage-style -- lower costs, virtual collaboration, team mates contributing labor beyond their day jobs because they believe in this project.

Help us generate awareness on the project. If you're interested to blog about it or write a story about it for any type of media, feel free to repost the messages below. You may also contact me through rubencanlas(at)gmail(dot)com.

Drupal 6 - Easiest Version of Drupal, Ever!

The open source community is celebrating the release of Drupal's easiest version ever: Drupal 6 [http://drupal.org/drupal-6.0]. This version fixes many of the annoyances and limitations of Drupal.

Among the improvements are easier installation, with carefully guided steps. Drag and drop administration, including the much-awaited drag-drop taxonomy administration, openID and an improved workflow module (via custom triggers). Drupal themes are now easier to customize too.

Improving Google in Filipino

My pet peeve with Google is the awkward and sometimes silly Filipino version of its website. "Preferences," for example, is literally translated to "Mga Kagustuhan" which sounds more like "Your wish is my command." :)

I was also frustrated when they first translated the "I'm feeling lucky" button to "May kutob ako" -- which was not the real sense of that button.

To translate this idiomatic command, we first need to understand what the button does. In case you didn't know: you click the "I'm feeling lucky" button if you trust Google enough. If you click it, Google jumps you to the first result in the search, instead of displaying a page of results.
